APPA May Community Circle: Sustaining Membership Drive and New Benefits

May 2024

In May, the APPA Team met with APPA members and prospective members to discuss the new Sustaining Membership Drive and new benefits. This was an open call to discuss the changes being made to the financial structure of the organization, as well an open forum for any questions or concerns.

Psychedelic Seminar: SB1012 & You - Regulated Psychedelic Facilitation in CA

May 2024

In our May Psychedelic Seminar, we were joined by then CA SB 1012 coalition leaders and advisors Nara Dahlbacka, Managing Partner of Milo Group, and Dr. Nathaniel Mills, Executive Director of the Sacramento Institute for Psychotherapy. We learned about the latest developments of California Senate Bill 1012 "The Regulated Psychedelic Facilitators Act and the Regulated Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Act", and how to get involved in legislative process by sharing your support and feedback with your local legislators.

APPA Psychedelic Seminar: State of the States and Capacity Building for the Future

April 2024

In our April Psychedelic Seminar, we took a different approach on the state of the field, delving into the broad umbrella of these topics through the lens of programs being developed state-to-state.

We were joined by Barine Majewska, J.D., of Vicente LLP to update us on the status of psilocybin-assisted services in Colorado, California, and several other states. Also joining was Britt Rollins, Founder and Executive Director of the National Psychedelics Association, to discuss what is being done to support organizations and practitioners as they begin to practice psychedelic medicine through the state structures.

APPA Psychedelic Seminar: Training and Education Updates from NYU Langone Center and Beckley Academy

February 2024

In February, we were joined by the Director of Clinical Training at NYU's Langone Center for Psychedelics Kelley O'Donnell, Beckley Academy's Head of Education Deb Gardner, and BA's Head of Growth and Partnerships Shirelle Noble to discuss the state of the field of psychedelic assisted therapy training.

APPA Psychedelic Seminar: Ethical Implications of Practicing with Psychedelic Medicine

November 2023

This month we were joined by bioethicists Dominic Sisti, PhD, and Amy McGuire, J.D., PhD to discuss the ethical implications of working with psychedelic medicines.

The use of psychedelics in medical practice raises significant ethical considerations. Since psychedelics tend to induce intense and significant experiences for patients, special attention must be paid to issues about patient suggestibility and vulnerability . While ethical considerations for the practice of psychedelic-assisted therapy is a vast and wide-reaching conversation, there are a number of commonly-occurring questions that have been raised based on expert consensus.

APPA Psychedelic Seminar: Legal Concerns for Psychedelic Practitioners

September 2023

In our first Psychedelic Seminar, we discuss the current legal concerns for psychedelic practitioners in the field.  APPA Director of Government Affairs and Infrastructure Hadas Alterman is joined by legal experts Brad Bartlett, Attorney at Plant Medicine Law Group; Allison Hoots, Principal at Hoots Law Practice, and Kaci Hohmann, Attorney at Emerge Law Group.

APPA Town Hall: Discussing the Professional Practice Guidelines 

August 2023

In August, we were joined by four of the authors of the APPA-BrainFutures Professional Practice Guidelines that were released at the beginning of August. We had the opportunity to sit down together and discuss the guidelines in detail, including what was left out, how to incorporate into practice, and how we might continue to improve upon them in future iteration. Many thanks to the authors who attended with us: Andrew Penn, RN, MS, NP; Natalie Gukasyan, MD; Jordan Sloshower, MD, MSc; and Mark Bates, Ph.D.

APPA July Town Hall: Commenting on the FDA Draft Guidelines for Psychedelic Research

The American Psychedelic Practitioners Association presented its July Town Hall on July 26th. Led by Executive Director Dr. Stephen Xenakis with support and advisement from Matt Zorn of Yetter Coleman LLP, the discussion included ideas to spark responses from the community to the draft FDA Guidelines on Psychedelic Research, released by the FDA at the end of June 2023.

Increasing Inclusiveness for Sexual and Gender Minorities in Psychedelic Therapy

As research is underway to investigate how psychedelics may be able to address some of the specific traumas faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community, we must also ensure adequate representation of the community in study subjects, patients, and therapists administering the psychotherapy. This webinar will address those issues and discuss ways psychedelic practitioners can improve the therapy experience for members of the LGBTQIA+ community via inclusive practices, including trauma-informed protocols and thorough consent techniques.

Establishing Professional Standards in Psychedelic Therapy (Members Only)

With FDA approvals imminent, there is an urgent need for a trustworthy standard of care to inform best practices. Psychedelic practitioners will play an integral part in establishing and carrying out these standards. During this webinar, we'll hear from many different stakeholders in the development of psychedelic medicine and therapy standards of care, and members will learn how these developments will impact them and their practices.

Oregon's Psilocybin Program: Rules, Regulations, and Implementation

This webinar will feature panelists working on the ground level to implement Oregon's Measure 109 (setting up a model for adult use of psilocybin). They will update us on what the implementation looks like for practitioners, patients, and others involved in making the first statewide legalization a reality.

APPA Townhall: Anticipating Federal Engagement

Many have read the news around the potential engagement of federal agencies to “monitor and address the numerous complex issues associated with emerging substances.” Coordinated advocacy is one of the best ways to ensure the integration of psychedelic-assisted therapies in the United States is community-led, safe, effective, and accessible for all who can benefit. Now is the time to come together, share our hopes and fears, and plan for this exciting development.
